AB - Sintering, crystallization and foaming of nano glass powders with composition La2O3 center dot SrO center dot 5B(2)O(3) were studied by hot stage microscopy (HSM) and simultaneous thermal analysis (DTA-TG) under non-isothermal regime at 10 degrees C/min and by optical contactless dilatometer under isothermal conditions at 700 degrees C up to 10 hours for different times. After the thermal treatments, specimens were characterized by gas pycnometry, X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopes (FE-SEM). The results demonstrate that the densification completed before the crystallization process, thus forming well sintered samples. Then, during the phase formation gas is released, which leads to foaming process. After holding of 160 minutes at 700 degrees C the degree of crystallization reached about 0.8 and the foaming stopped. The obtained sample had high closed porosity and quite intriguing structure composed of two fairly different crystal arrangements. The first was "sponge-like", while the second was denser and consisted of "sheets", 10-30 nm thick. The subsequent holding led to re-crystallization, formation of larger denser zones that reached even 10-15 mu m and an increase in open porosity. These results highlight that in the case of sinter crystallization of nano powders, some intriguing features can be expected.

AB - The crystal structure of new lanthanum strontium borate glass-ceramics was refined by the Rietveld method. The results showed that La2SrB10O19 has the monoclinic crystal structure, space group C2 (No. 5) with a = 11.1170(6), b = 6.5667(3), c = 9.2363(3) angstrom, beta = 91.481 degrees, V = 674.04(7) angstrom(3), two formula units per unit-cell, and density 3.830 g cm(-3). The main building units of the crystal structure are BO4 tetrahedra and BO3 triangles. Clusters composed of [B5O12] form an infinite double layer running perpendicular to the c-axis. Lanthanum atoms, situated in [B5O12](n) layers, are coordinated with 10 oxygen atom in a form of LaO10 polyhedra, while Sr atoms, located between [B5O12](n) layers, are coordinated with 8 oxygen atoms in a form of SrO8 polyhedra. Microstructural measurements contain both crystallite domain sizes and microstrain calculations obtained by the Warren Averbach and the simplified integral-breadth methods.

AB - Due to the dissolution properties the phosphate glasses can be promising materials for the development of new ecologically safe fertilizers. The complex polyphosphate glass with a molar ratio (M2O + MO)/P2O5 >1 and addition of microelements Zn2+, Mn2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ were used in substrate for production of flower and vegetables seedlings. Dissolution tests were conducted in deionized water and 2% citric acid. The effects of the reaction time on the normalized glass mass loss (fm) and the normalized concentrations of the ions (fi) at 20, 30, 37 and 50°C were determined. Dissolution rate constants (kw - deionized water, kc -2% citric acid) were also determined (kw-0.0028-0.0094 gm-2, kc-0.029-0.011 gm-2). Values of kc were higher than those of kw, which confirms a significant effect of solvent type and temperature on the dissolution kinetics of glass. The experiments with plants (one vegetable and one flower) showed that the addition of phosphate glass caused an increase in yield and quality of plants. The applied dose of polyphosphate glass of 1gl-1 showed the best effect on the growth of the examined plant seedlings.

AB - The increasing production of coal fly ash waste from thermal power plants has compounded environmental and economical problems worldwide. Considerable research has been undertaken because of the environmental problems presented by the fly ash. The goal is to produce usable material from waste. The aim of this papier is to produce glass from fly ash and limestone that will have high resistance to dissolution and leaching. Obtained glass could have wide application in industry. Coal fly ash was mixed with 37% limestone and melted in electric furnace at T=1500 °C during t=1 h. The obtained glass sample was black, without visible residual gas bubbles. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD)analysis confirmed the quenched melt to be amorphous. To determine the chemical durability, glass sample was crushed and then sieved to grain size 0.3-0.5 mm. The corrosion test was performed in a distilled water, HCl and NaOH solution (0.01 M9 at T=95 °C for t=2h using 2 g of samples and 70 ml of solution. The results of corrosion test revealed a high durability of the glass sample. Potential application of this material would include use as: building blocks, anticorrosive container lining, matrix material in which radioactive wastes and heavy metals could be successfully solidified into the glass structure.

AB - Due to their potential bioactive properties, different types of phosphate based glasses have been considered for bone tissue engineering and drug delivery applications. In this experiment, four different compositions of glasses (42P2O5·40CaO·5SrO·10Na2O·3TiO2 , 46P2O5·40CaO·SrO·10Na2O·3TiO2 , 42P2O5·40CaO·5La2O3·10Na2O·3TiO2 , and 46P2O5·40CaO·La2O3·10Na2O·3TiO2 (mol%)) were obtained by standard melt-quenching method. The crystallization and sintering behavior of glasses have been studied by using DTA, HSM and XRD methods. For all of the glass compositions the sintered phosphate glass-ceramic samples contained certain bioactive phases (α-Ca3(PO4)2, β-Ca3(PO4)2, β-Ca2P2O7,β-CaP2O6). Based on the glass properties, the use of these glasses in obtaining the bioactive glass scaffolds with a suitable interconnected porous structure is achievable. Bioactive scaffolds have potential to aid the bone regeneration process by giving cell a temporary template to grow into, provoking bone cell activity. Also, glasses with stable uniform porous structure and high surface area can be used as porous carriers for controlled drug delivery.

AB - In this paper crystallization of glass 42P2O5·40CaO·5SrO·10Na2O·3TiO2 (mol %) was studied. The glass was prepared by the standard melt-quenching method. The experiments were performed under non-isothermal conditions using the XRD and DTA methods. It was determined that the surface and volume crystallization mechanism act simultaneously in bulk glass samples. The sintered calcium phosphate glass-ceramic which contains bioactive β-Ca3(PO4)2 and β-Ca2P2O7 phases was prepared. From the experimental data an activation energy of crystal growth is calculated Ea=126.61±2.39 KJ / mol.

AB - The increasing production of fly ashes from carbon combustion in thermal power plants has compounded environmental problems worldwide. As one of promising solution the vitrification of fly ashes could be considered. For potential application chemical durability of material should be known. Dissolution of coal fly ash glass grain samples was studied. The glass was obtained by melting a mixture of coal fly ash, Na2CO3 and CaCO3 at T= 1500 oC and quenching the melt in air. The chemical durability of the glass was determined by dissolution test in distilled water, HCl and NaOH at T = 950C for t =2h. It was shown that dissolution rate of glass in distillated water and NaOH is negligible, while in HCl solution was shown significant mass loss.

AB - Copper mine tailings is one of the most used secondary raw materials. The most common use is in cement industry and as filler in road construction. The area of secondary raw materials utilization offering the greatest potential is in the development of glass-ceramic compositions, where the waste is melted to form a glass, fabricated using conventional glass forming techniques, and subsequently nucleated and devitrified in a controlled manner through heat treatment. The resultant, partially crystallized material offers improved strength, chemical and abrasion resistance. Copper mine tailings was mixed with 30% glass cullets and melted in electric furnace BLF 17/3 at T=1450 °C during t=0.5 h. The obtained glass sample was black, without visible residual gas bubbles. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the quenched melt to be amorphous. DTA and HSM analysis was performed on the previously prepared glass powder. The glass powder samples were pressed in pellets and sintered in an electric furnace at the temperature of 1040 °C for 2h and a glass- ceramics was obtained. Applications for these glass-ceramic materials would include structural products, pipe or pipeliners to transport abrasive or corrosive fluids, alkali-resistant fibers to replace asbestos in concrete products, and use as a matrix material in which radioactive wastes could be chemically incorporated in a stable, nonleachable, solid form.

AB - The peculiarities of sinter-crystallization of La2O3 center dot SrO center dot 5B(2)O(3) fine glass powder (below 1 mu m) are investigated and discussed. The sintering was studied by contactless optical dilatometry and porosity measurements. The crystallization process was evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the crystalline phase formation was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Finally the microstructures of the samples sintered at different temperatures were observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The specific aim of this study was to highlight the influence of sintering temperature and heating rate on the densification process and the final structure of glass-ceramic samples. It was shown that zero water adsorption and minimum closed porosity of similar to 3% were obtained at heating rate of 2 degrees C/min and at about 1 h holding at 690 degrees C. The temperature increase accelerated intense foaming process that resulted in formation of total porosity of 35-45%. It was also demonstrated that the foaming depended on the heating rate: the higher the heating rate - the more intensive was the bloating. The observed foaming process was related to intensive crystallization and re-crystallization of La2O3 center dot SrO center dot 5B(2)O(3) crystal phase. The phase formation processes entirely completed after 30-60 min at 730-740 degrees C with the formation of intriguing and unusual crystal structures.

The activation energy of glass crystallization (E-a) was determined using different isokinetic methods. The dependence of E-a on the degree of glass-crystal transformation (alpha) was studied using model-free isoconversional linear integral KAS (Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose) and FWO (Flynn-Wall-Ozawa) methods. It was shown that the E-a varies with a and hence with temperature and consequently the glass/crystal transformation can be described as a complex process involving different mechanisms of nucleation and growth.

AB - Because of their potential application in bone tissue repair and regeneration, different types of bioactive glasses have been extensively studied. This study has been focused on examination of the dissolution process of two bioactive glass compositions, 42P2O5·40CaO·5SrO·10Na2O·3TiO2 (GSSR5) and 46P2O5·40CaO·SrO·10Na2O·3TiO2 (GSSR1) (mol%). Powdered glass samples were immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF) and kept in a water bath at 37 °C for 21 days under semi-dynamic conditions. The mass loss of glass, normalized concentration of ions and pH values of solutions were determined. Dissolution rates for both glasses were increasing until the 5h mark and after that time the dissolution rates decreased. After the 48 h glass dissolution rates reached the steady state. Measured dissolution rates after 168h for GSSR5 and GSSR1 were 1.13·10-4 gh-1 and 3.61·10-4 gh-1, respectively.

abstract = "Because of their potential application in bone tissue repair and regeneration, different types of bioactive glasses have been extensively studied. Measured dissolution rates after 168h for GSSR5 and GSSR1 were 1.13·10-4 gh-1 and 3.61·10-4 gh-1, respectively.",

AB - In recent years, because of dissolution behavior, bioactivity and biocompatibility, there is an expanding interest in the development and application of phosphate-based glasses as biomaterials in medicine [1, 2]. These glasses are preferable to silica-based glasses because of their more controllable dissolution rate [3, 4]. Several techniques have been developed to fabricate bioactive porous glass-ceramic scaffolds for application in bone tissue engineering [5-7]. In this paper, the 3D macroporous bioactive glass-ceramic scaffolds based on 42P2O5•40CaO•5SrO•10Na2O•3TiO2 (mol %) glass were prepared by polyurethane (PU) foam replication technique and analyzed. The appropriate batch composition of raw materials was melted at 1250 °C for 0.5 h in a Pt crucible. Obtained glass samples were transparent, without visible residual gas bubbles. To obtain desired particle size (< 5μm), the glass sample was ground at 400 rpm for 1h in an SFM-1 Desk-Top Planetary Ball Miller, MTI Corporation. The polymeric template used for scaffold preparation was a commercial PU sponge. The sponge cubes were soaked into the glass slurry, compressed, dried, and thermally treated (650 °C, 1h) to remove the organic phase and to obtain macroporous glass-ceramic scaffolds. The sintering temperature for glass was chosen according to DTA and HSM experiment performed previously [8]. Scaffolds structure and morphology were analyzed by stereo microscope (EU Instruments) and a scanning electron microscope (MIRA X 3 TESCAN). The phase composition of the sintered scaffold was determined by XRD analysis using a Philips PW-1710 automated diffractometer. Figure 1, shows the structure of the PU sponge, used as a scaffold template that exhibits a 3D network of pores, which vary in size from 100 to 600 µm. In Figure 2, the SEM micrograph of the PU skeleton coated with glass particles is shown. As may be seen in Figure 3, the morphology of the scaffold sintered at T = 650 °C for 1h remains highly porous without a significant decrease in the pore size. The images revealed that the pore struts are well sintered. XRD analysis of the powdered scaffold showed that during sintering the glass particles crystallized and the crystalline phases determined are: Ca(PO3)2, β-Ca3(PO4)2, α-Ca2P2O7 and β-Ca2P2O7 (Figure 4). For β-Ca3(PO4)2 and β-Ca2P2O7 the bioactivity, i.e. the ability to promote the formation of apatite (HAP) layer after reaction with the surrounding body fluid has been reported [9]. The obtained phase composition and the microstructure of the as-prepared scaffold indicated its possible application as a bioactive material for bone tissue engineering [10].

Two powder sizes of the glass (granulation: 0.1-0.3 and 0.3-0.65 mm) and the bulk glass were investigated. The dissolution experiments were conducted under stationary conditions. Changes in the normalized mass release, normalized concentration of ions, pH values, and surface morphology were determined as a function of the dissolution time. The initial rates of glass powder dissolution and leaching of ions, as well as the diffusion coefficient of cations and the releasing rate of ions, during the hydrolysis process of glass were determined. It was shown that the investigated phosphate glass dissolves in SBF incongruently, with neither precipitation nor the formation of newly potentially toxic compounds, in a dissolution period 720 h.

AB - Melt-quenching method was employed for obtaining a glass-ceramic with the following composition 42P(2)O(5). 40CaO.5SrO.10Na(2)O.3TiO(2) (mol%) glass. The crystallization and sintering behavior of glass have been studied by using DTA, HSM, XRD, FTIR and SEM methods. It was determined that the surface and volume crystallization mechanisms act simultaneously in bulk glass samples. The comparison of DTA and HSM data revealed that the sintering and crystallization processes are independent. The sintered calcium phosphate glass ceramic which contained bioactive beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2) and beta-Ca2P2O7 phases was successfully prepared. It was determined that during crystallization the primary phase in the precipitate was beta-Ca(PO3)(2). Other phases appearing in the resulting glass-ceramic were: alpha-Ca2P2O7, gamma-Ca2PO7, Ca4P6O19 and CaHPO4(H2O)(2). Crystalline phases containing Sr and Ti were not detected. SEM analysis of the glass-ceramic microstructure revealed surface crystallization of glass particles and plate-like morphology of crystal growth. The result of the in vitro bioactivity showed that no apatite layer was formed on the surface of the as-prepared glass-ceramic samples after immersion in the simulated body fluid (SBF).

AB - Lithium based solid electrolytes are mainly useful for utilization in high energy density batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, displays and electrochemical devices. They generally crystallize in rhombohedral R3-c(167) space group related to open structures and the monovalent Li+ cation can easily migrate in lattice with low activation energy. These materials are usually obtained by powder sintering route and the crystallization of these glasses. The studies of crystallization of Li2O–Al2O3–GeO2–P2O5 glasses showed that one of dominant crystal phase precipitated in glass matrix is NASICON - type LiGe2(PO4)3 crystals. It was detected that this glass crystallizes by the volume crystallization mechanism. The enthalpy of crystallization ΔHcryst= -48.36 kJmol-1 was determined. The density of the crystalline phase was ρ=3.52 gcm-3 and molar volume Vm = 121.09 ·10-6 m3. The ionic conductivity of the test phase which be-longs to the solid solutions is about 6.2· 10−6 Scm-1 at room temperature.
It may be considered that the structure of this glass consists of GeO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra. The basic unit of this glass consists of two GeO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra corresponding to [Ge2(PO4)]. Each GeO6 octahedron is connected to three PO4 tetrahedra, each of which is linked to four GeO6 octahedra.
These units in turn are connected to form `ribbons` along the c-axis and the ribbons are joined together along the a-and b-axis by PO4 tetrahedra. This structure results in cavities where lithium ions reside and in bottlenecks in which they pass through.

abstract = "Lithium based solid electrolytes are mainly useful for utilization in high energy density batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, displays and electrochemical devices.
AB - The crystallization and sintering behaviors of polyphosphate glass doped with trace elements Zn and Mn were examined. The heating experiments on bulk and powder glass samples were performed. The parent glass revealed low crystallization ability and the glass crystallization carried out under simultaneous acting of the surface and volume mechanisms. The bulk glass sample isothermally heated at T (c) = 500 A degrees C commences to crystallize after 12 h, and KPO3 and Ca2KP3O10 crystalline phases appeared. The dendritic morphology of the crystals growing on sample surface was determined. The DTA and HSM results showed that the sintering and crystallization processes are independent. Phosphate glass-ceramics containing KPO3, K2Mg(PO3)(4), Ca(PO3)(2) and KCa(PO3)(3) crystalline phases has been prepared by sintering of the glass powder compacts at T (c) = 500 A degrees C for t = 12 h. A plate-like morphology of crystals which grow on glass grains surface was observed. The activation energies of crystal growth, E (a,k) = (246.6 +/- A 19.74) kJ mol(-1) (Kissinger) and E (a,oz) = (258.80 +/- A 19.70) kJ mol(-1) (Ozawa), were calculated.

AB - The selected lanthanum-strontium borate glasses were prepared by a conventional melt-quenching technique. The compositions of the investigated glasses were chosen to be: 5.7, 9.5, 14.3, 19.1 mol% for La2O3, 22.9, 19.1, 14.3, 9.5 mol% for SrO and 71.4 mol% for B2O3. The density, molar volume, oxygen molar volume, oxygen packing density, oxygen/boron ratios and structural transformations in the glass network were investigated according to the substitution of SrO by La2O3. The density and the molar volume increased in parallel with La2O3 content increase. Simultaneously, oxygen molar volume values increased while the oxygen packing density values decreased. A hot stage microscope (HSM) and a differential thermal analysis (DTA) were used to determine the characteristic temperatures. By increasing the content of lanthanum, the glass transition temperatures, changed with the same trend as the molar volume. Glass stability parameters were calculated from the temperatures obtained by DTA and HSM. The HSM results were used to obtain the viscosity curves by applying the Vogel-Fulcher-Tamman (VFT) equation.

AB - The objective of this study was the review of natural zeolite, modified with acid, as a candidate material for the remediation of groundwater contaminated by uranium(VI). The modified zeolite samples were obtained by treatment of natural zeolite - clinoptilolite with acids: hydrochloric, oxalyc and citric. Starting and modified zeolites were characterized by chemical analysis, SEM, XRPD analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermal (TG/DT) analysis and by determination of cation exchange capacity, while starting and nonadsorbed amounts of uranium(VI) ion were determined by fluorometric method. Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of solid/liquid ratio, pH and time on the U(VI) uptake by zeolite. Modification of zeolitic tuff with acids significantly increased adsorption of uranium(VI). The highest adsorption of uranium(VI) ion was achieved on clinoptilolite modified with hydrochloric acid. Uranium(VI) adsorption data for zeolite modified with hydrochloric acid was fitted to the Langmuir model.

AB - In this study, the crystallization of 30Li(2)O center dot 15Nb(2)O(5)center dot 50SiO(2)center dot 5TiO(2) (mol%) glass was examined. The parent glass was prepared by the standard melt quenching method, and the investigations were performed under non-isothermal and isothermal conditions using the DTA, XRD, SEM and EDS methods. The results revealed primary crystallization of this glass and the dendritic morphology of crystal growth. Three crystalline phases were formed in the glass matrix during crystallization, whereby LiNbO3 was formed as the primary phase, followed by Li2Si2O5 and SiO2 as the secondary. The surface and volume mechanisms of crystallization occur. The condition that both the mechanisms were dominant was determined. In the case of volume crystallization, the characteristics of the nucleation process were examined. The kinetic parameters of crystallization under different mechanisms of crystallization were determined.

The kinetic parameters of crystallization under different mechanisms of crystallization were determined.",

AB - In this paper the results of investigation of the polyphosphate glasses dissolution in acid solution at temperatures of 20, 30 and 37 °C were presented. The dissolution process in citric acid is complex and can be explained by hydration reaction and hydrolysis, leading to the disruption of phosphate chains which form the structure of glass. Mechanism of chemical reactivity of polyphosphate glasses, acting as slow release fertilizers in soil solutions was presented. The results of the dissolution experiments indicated that this glass can be used as an eco- fertilizer in soil remediation.

AB - In this paper the results of examination of the dissolution process of the polyphosphate glass 45P2O5×25K2O×15CaO×10MgO×3SiO2×ZnO×MnO [mol%] in 2% citric acid at temperatures of 15, 20 and 30 ºC were presented. The dissolution experiments were performed on glass powder grain size of 0.1-0.3 mm and 0.3-0.65 mm. The mass loss of glass, normalized concentration of PO43+ and K+ ions and the conductivity of solution (χ) as a function of leaching time was determined. It was revealed that for short reaction times, the changes of normalized mass loss (fm) are linear with time and the rates of glass dissolution under given conditions are highest. By increasing the dissolution time the dissolution rate of glass decreased. The initial release rates r0 (PO43-) = 3.550 [g/m2h] and r0 (K+) = 2.133 [g/m2h] at t = 300C were calculated for glass powder sample 0.3-0.65mm. The dissolution process in citric acid is complex and can be explained by hydration reaction and hydrolysis, leading to the disruption of phosphate chains which form the structure of glass.
