AB - The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures of cordierite (2MgO*2Al2O3*5SiO2) with
5.00 mass % TiO2 was performed in a high energy ball mill during 10-80 min. The applied compaction
pressure before the sintering process was 2t/cm2. The sintering process was performed at 1350°C
for 2h and 4h in air atmosphere. Scanning electron microscopy was performed to analyze the microstructure
of both compacted and sintered samples. Atomic force microscope was used to investigate
the surface of the sintered samples. This paper investigates the influence of prolonged sintering time
on the densities of the sintered samples, along with electrical properties.

AB - Mechanical activation is a commonly used and relatively fast and inexpensive procedure for
sample preparation before the sintering process. Cordierite is a stoichiometric mixture of three different
oxides (2MgO⋅2Al2O3⋅5SiO2). It is a very attractive, widely used high-temperature ceramic
material. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures with 5.00 mass % TiO2 was performed
in a high energy ball mill during 10-80 min. The applied compaction pressure before the sintering
process was 2 t/cm2, based on our recent investigation. The sintering process was performed at 1350
°C for 2h and 4h in air atmosphere. X-ray diffraction was used to analyze the phase composition of
non- activated and 80 min activated samples, sintered for 2 and 4h, respectively. This paper investigates
the influence of prolonged sintering time on the product electrical properties.

AB - Steatite, as ceramic with composition predominantly resting on magnesium silicate, was produced from economic resources - talc, aluminosilicate clays, and either BaCO3 or feldspar as flux. Titanium dioxide was a doping agent. Four steatite mixtures were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 30, 45 or 60 min, prior to the thermal treatment. Two-step sintering with initial phase set at 1350 degrees C and holding period conducted at 1250 degrees C was applied to initiate diffusion and prevent grain growth. Thereby, a high density ceramic material with low-porous submicron structure was acquired. The effects of TiO2 addition on densification, microstructure, and dielectric characteristics of steatites were monitored. The thermal stability of green mixtures was tested by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses. Changes in crystallinity and mineral phase composition were observed by the X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization with spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements on surface of the sintered ceramics was acquired by scanning electron microscopy accompanied with EDS mapping. In order to test the possibility of employment of the obtained steatites in insulation materials, electrical measurements were conducted by recording variations of the dielectric constant and loss tangent as a function of alternations in the mix-design and the mechanical activation period.

AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100-1400 degrees C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 degrees C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

AB - The influence of the sintering method on the mineral phase transformations and development of the crystalline microstructure of steatite ceramics was investigated. The steatite samples were fabricated from talc and bentonite as low-cost raw materials. Feldspar and barium carbonate, as fluxing agents, were altered in the steatite composition. Dilatometric analysis was applied in the monitoring of the dimensional changes and thereby densification of steatite during the traditional sintering (TS) procedure up to 1200 degrees C. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was used under the following sintering conditions: 100 degrees C/min heating rate, uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa; sintering temperature 800 degrees C/1 min or 1000 degrees C/2 min. Crystallinity changes and mineral phase transition during sintering were observed by X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization of the samples and the spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements were achieved via scanning electron microscopy equipped with the EDS mapping. It was found that SPS sintering facilitated all microstructural changes during high temperature treatment and shifted them to lower temperatures. SPS treatment conducted at 1000 degrees C resulted in maximum densification of the steatite powder compacts and the formation stabilized protoenstatite structure.

AB - This study provided insights into relations between sintering mechanism and behavior of two types of steatite-based ceramics. Experimental steatite samples were synthesized from low-cost natural raw materials. The sintering was conducted via dilatometer and SPS method. The thermally induced changes in the steatites and its properties were monitored by instrumental analyses: mineral phase transition was investigated via XRD, and the thermal stability was observed using DTA. The investigation highlighted the optimal combinations of the raw materials for production of the steatite ceramics for advanced electrical engineering applications.

The thermally induced changes in the steatites and its properties were monitored by instrumental analyses: mineral phase transition was investigated via XRD, and the thermal stability was observed using DTA. The investigation highlighted the optimal combinations of the raw materials for production of the steatite ceramics for advanced electrical engineering applications.",

AB - The focus of the study was on providing insights into interconnections between sintering and development of the crystalline microstructure, and consequently variations in dielectric behavior of four steatites fabricated from a low-cost raw material, i.e. talc. The changes, induced by the alternations of the binders (bentonite, kaolin clay) and fluxing agents (BaCO3, feldspar), were monitored in the temperature range 1000 degrees to 1250 degrees C in which complete densification and re-crystallization of the investigated structures were accomplished. The critical points in the synthesis of steatite materials were assessed by instrumental analyses. Crystallinity changes and mineral phase transition during sintering were monitored by X-ray diffraction technique. Microstructural visualization of the samples and the spatial arrangements of individual chemical elements were achieved via scanning electron microscopy accompanied with EDS mapping. The thermal stability was observed on the green mixtures using differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analyses. Electrical measurements recorded variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of the sintering temperature. The investigation highlighted critical design points, as well as the optimal combinations of the raw materials for production of the steatite ceramics for advanced electrical engineering applications.

AB - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

AB - Cordierite-based ceramic materials are attracting much interest for their various applications in industry, for manufacturing multilayer circuit boards, catalytic converters, filters, thermal insulation, kiln furniture, components of portable electronic devices, etc. In order to reduce production costs and modify cordierite-based materials, mechanical activation can be used. In this study, microstructural and electrical properties of mechanically activated MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been analyzed. The mixtures of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for the time periods from 0 to 160 min. Morphological investigations have been performed on the obtained powders. The effects of activation and two-step sintering process on microstructure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrical measurements showed variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of time of mechanical treatment.

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20·10-7 oC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a highenergy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

AB - The effects that the fly ash addition has on the behavior of thermally resistant corundum concrete were discussed. Experimental program implied production of two refractory composites: "referent" concrete from 20 % of high-aluminate cement and 80 % of corundum aggregate, "recycled" concrete from 10 % of high-aluminate cement, 20 % of lignite coal ash, and 70 % of corundum aggregate. The fly ash was mechanically activated by a vibratory disk mill. In the concrete matrix, the ash had a role of cement partial replacement and microfiller. The mechanical and thermal properties of the concretes were studied at temperatures ranging from ambient to 1,400 A degrees C as adopted maximum. Mechanisms of thermally induced processes were observed by differential thermal analysis at 10, 20, and 30 A degrees C min(-1) heating rates. Referent and recycled concretes showed differences in calculated activation energies. The variations in refractory concretes performances were discussed with support of scanning electron microscope imagining and X-ray diffraction results. The recycled ash concrete exhibited properties that met the requirements for the castables, which proves it suitable for use in severe conditions at high temperature and highlights the reusing principle and possibility of cleaner and economically sustainable production.

AB - Cordierite (MAS) is difficult to sinter because of the very narrow sintering temperature range (1300-1400 degrees C). Because a low temperature process is desirable, it is necessary to find functional ads which can allow easier sintering process at lower temperature. The influence of MoO3 on the preparation process of cordierite ceramics was investigated. 2MgO-2Al(2)O(3)-5SiO(2) was researched by sintering followed binary systems: MgO/MoO3, Al2O3/MoO3 and SiO2/MoO3 (all sintered at 850 degrees C and 1100 degrees C, sintering time 2h). Composition of these systems was 80 mass% of oxide and 20 mass% MoO3. The effects of sintering, the composition and morphology were followed by X-ray diffraction and SEM microscopy. It has been found that MoO3, beside liquid phase, forms intermediary unstable compounds with MgO and Al2O3, which is the significance information for further research. MAS ceramics were sintered with 20 mass% MoO3 at 1100 degrees C, 1200 degrees C and 1300 degrees C, during 2h.

AB - The effect of vibratory mill induced mechanical activation on the change of the particle size, crystallinity and the phase transformations of the minerals present in the activated material, was studied with the purpose of decreasing of the sintering temperature of talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)(2)) as raw material which is the basic component of the steatite ceramics. The aims of the conducted investigation were, also, increasing of the reactivity of the comminuted raw material and establishing of the optimal activation period. The properties of the activated talc induced by mechanical force were expressed in form of the grain inertia change which was measured by means of automatic grain counter. Mechanically activated grains are the most convenient mineral form for physical concentration since the energy change of the mill-material system is recorded on them. The effect of dry grinding on the structure, particle size and shape of talc was studied by means of XRD, DTA and SEM/EDS methods. Activation of talc produced an increase of the starting surface area value progressively from 4.5 m(2)/g up to a maximum of 108.5 m(2)/g achieved at 30 min. A subsequent decrease of rate of surface area change and the rate of size reduction were observed following the prolonged grinding. Talc activated in vibratory mill for optimal 30 min showed properties which positively influence the decrease of sintering temperature and the increase of the sintering rate of steatite ceramics.

Mikroskopom atomskih sila smo analizirali površinu oba uzorka.

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - Amount of fly ash which is and yet to be generated in the coming years highlights the necessity of developing new methods of the recycling where this waste can be reused in significant quantity. A new possibility for fly ash utilization is in high-temperature application (thermal insulators or/and refractory material products). As such, fly ash has to adequately answer the mechanical and thermal stability criteria. One of the ways of achieving it is by applying mechanical activation procedure on fly ash. In present study, fly ashes from two different power plants were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill. Mechanically treated fly ashes were cemented with two different binders: standard Portland cement and high-aluminates cement. Physico-chemical analysis and investigation of mineralogical components of composites are emphasized, due to the changes occurred in fly ash during mechanical activation and sintering of composites. Macro-performance of the composites was correlated to the microstructure of fly ash studied by means of XRD and SEM analysis. Thermal stability of crystalline phases was investigated with DTA. Highlight was placed on determination of relationship between mechanically activated fly ash and obtained composites microstructure on one side and behavior of sintered composites on the other side.

AB - Three-component oxide mixtures were prepared containing MgO, Al (2) O (3) and SiO (2) in a 2 : 2 : 5 ratio with addition of 10% Bi (2) O (3). The mixtures were mechanically activated in a range from 5 to 240 min in a mill with ceramic balls, and sintered in the range 1173-1573 K. In order to determine the structure transformations, sintered products were analyzed by the XRD method. The goal of the research was to find the possible correlation between process parameters and functional properties of the cordierite-based ceramic materials. Quantitative measures of the functional sample properties, capacity (C (c) ) and electrical resistance (R (rho)), as well as of dielectric loss (tg delta) were used. The results obtained prove that there is a correlation between mechanical activation and properties of cordierite ceramics.

AB - In this paper the effects of mechanical activation on structural and microstructural changes of the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2 were analyzed. It was confirmed that mechanical activation led to the homogenization of powder particles, the comminuting of particles, and after this period, the introduced energy was used to induce changes in the crystal structure, which resulted in the emergence of defects, initially on the surface of the crystal lattice, and then inside.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3-ZnO-TiO2 were mechanically activated using high-energy planetary ball mill during 20, 40 and 80 min. As the time of mechanical activation increased, the decrease in particle size was observed. The effect of milling on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, as well. Sintering process was performed in air at 1100 and 1200 C for 2 h. Various phases are present within mixtures sintered at 1100 and 1200 degrees C, and almost pure BaZn2Ti4O11 phase was obtained after 80 min of milling and sintering at 1200 degrees C for 2 h.

AB - In this paper the influence of mechanical activation on the system barium oxide - titan dioxide has been investigated. Also, the theoretic model of mechanochemical reaction has been introduced. Process of mechanical activation was conducted in vibro-mill in the 30 to 440 minutes interval. Solid state reaction has been noticed during the activation process. X-ray diffraction method has been employed in order to determine phase composition of mechanically activated mixtures. The process of milling could be divided into three stages: first stage-progressive destruction of reactant's crystal structure; second phase-nanocrystal structure formation as a consequence of defects introduction within crystal structure; third phase-obvious formation of a new phase and peak's intensities growth caused by crystal phase arranging. It was noticed that barium titanate was obtained successfully at the end of the milling process. Method of spectrofotometry has been chosen for determining the quantitative ratio of starting components during the reaction. The authors suggested the synthesis mechanism of barium-titanate and established the kinetic parameters. Also, it was notices that the reaction between barium oxide and titan dioxide represents 'two-stages' reaction, which includes the formation of intermediate compound BaO*TiO2. Having in mind that the constant of reaction velocity of the process of intermediate compound formation is greater than constant of barium titanate formation, we can conclude that activation energy of first stage is less than activation energy of second process. Analysis of kinetics showed that the half-time synthesis of mentioned compound is 77.7 minutes, while at the end of milling process the reaction between starting reactants was complete.

abstract = "U ovom radu ispitivan je uticaj mehaničke aktivacije na sistem barijum oksid-titan dioksid. Mehanička aktivacija je vršena u vibro-mlinu u vremenskom intervalu od 30 do 440 minuta. Tokom aktivacije došlo je do reakcije polaznih komponenti u čvrstoj fazi, pri čemu je kao krajnji produkt dobijen barijum-titanat. Metode rendgenske difrakcije i spektrofotometrijske analize su korišćene radi identifikacije faznog sastava i kvantitativnog sadržaja komponenti tokom reakcije. Predložen je mehanizam sinteze barijum-titanata i utvrđeni su kinetički parametri., In this paper the influence of mechanical activation on the system barium oxide - titan dioxide has been investigated.
