AB - Sintering and phase transition are often superimposed at dimensional change diagram recorded during heating. Phase transition kinetic is thus hard to deconvolute due to the superposition of the sintering and phase transition dimensional change phenomena.
Metastabile perovskite phase ZnTiO3 has transition to stabile spinel Zn2TiO4 which occurs at 945oC with high kinetic rate. Nano powder with 40 nm particle diameter was pressed uniaxially at 200 MPa pressure without binder to form compact that will be consequently sintered. Dimensional change during heating was monitored using dilatometric thermo-mechanical analyzer TMA model SETSYS Evolution. Lever`s rule was used to calculate amount of the emerging phase during phase transition.
The compacted specimens were treated on the non-isothermal schedule up to 1050oC.Sintering phenomenon of the ZnTiO3 nanopowder compact was also recorded up to 900oC with isothermal holding of 25 minutes where phase transition was avoided due to lower temperature and isothermal holding. Second run heating of the obtained sintered specimens were recorded with the heating schedule of non-isothermal heating up to 1050oC.
Kinetic of the phase transition was obtained from dilatograms recorded during sintering and from bulk on the second run heating. Furthermore, phase transition kinetics was obtained by subsequent data subtraction of the sintering curves without phase transition from the dilatation sintering curves containing phase transition.
In such a manner complex kinetics of phenomena such as sintering, linear expansion and phase transition recorded as dimensional change during heating brings the recognition of their mutual interconnected relations. Also application of these mathematical operations on dilatometric data leads to the established procedure for the sintering and phase transition data treatment.

AB - In this paper, the character of structural changes induced by different mechanical treatments to Prunus persica stones (PSs), and its subsequent effect on biosorption kinetics of Cu(II) were investigated. PSs were processed in vibratory disk mill (PS-V) and ultra-centrifugal mill (PS-C) and characterized by XRD, BET, SEM and FTIR spectroscopy. It was shown that PS-V was smaller and more reactive with less crystallinity index and hydrogen bond intensity compared to PS-C. In opposite, surface area of the PS-C was bigger than that of the PS-V. The total pore volume was about threefold, while the volume of micro pores was 9.29 times higher in PS-Cs than in PS-Vs. The kinetics of Cu(II) biosorption by both PSs was tested through various kinetic models: pseudo-first and pseudo-second order rate equations, Elovich equation, Boyd model, Weber-Morris and Urano-Tachikawa intraparticle diffusion model. For both sample types, Cu(II) biosorption occurred through combination of intraparticle and film diffusion mechanism, while kinetic results were best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model. At the same time, the results indicated that together with kinetic rate the biosorption capacity of PS-C (21.20 mg g(-1)) was higher than that of PS-V (16.30 mg g(-1)). Mechanical activation like crushing and grinding will change material particle size, specific surface area and porosity, as well as its crystallinity. However, this paper elucidates that such physical structural changes will impact on heavy metal ions removal efficiency. This investigation suggests that the type of size reduction in lignocellulosic biosorbent preparation plays a very important role in overall biosorption performance, so it should be carefully considered every time when the mechanical treatment of material is necessary to be applied.

AB - Thermally activated processes in cordierite-based ceramics were investigated to determine the effect of the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 on kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of these processes. Using a combination of dilatometry and DTA measurements in the 100-1400 degrees C temperature range, it was established that both the mechanical activation and the addition of TeO2 have a significant effect on processes in cordierite-based ceramics. A combination of 5 mass% addition of TeO2 and mechanical activation for 40 min reduced the sintering temperature of cordierite ceramics to around 1100 degrees C. In addition, the analysis of DTA measurements of mechanically activated samples indicates that the mechanical activation leads to intensification of the cordierite formation through an increase in concentration of surface defects and an increase in grain contact surface in the initial powder.

AB - Due to pozzolanic characteristics, fly ash is commonly used as a cement replacement in construction composites. Addition of natural clays with sorption ability (i.e. zeolite and bentonite) in to the fly ash based construction materials is of both scientific and industrial interest. Namely, due to the application of sorptive clay minerals, it is possible to immobilize toxic heavy metals from the composite structure. The thermal compatibility of fly ash and zeolite, as well as fly ash and bentonite, within the composite was observed during sintering procedure. The starting components were used in 1: 1 ratio and they were applied without additional mechanical treatment. The used compaction pressure for the tablets was 2 t.cm(-2). The sintering process was conducted at 1000 degrees C and 1200 degrees C for two hours in the air atmosphere. The mineralogical phase composition of the non-treated and sintered samples was analyzed using X-ray diffraction method. Scanning electron microscopy was applied in the analysis of the microstructure of starting and sintered samples. The thermal behavior was observed via DTA method. The influence of temperature on the properties of fly ash-zeolite and fly ash-bentonite composites was investigated.

AB - Since cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2) (MAS), is a very useful high-temperature ceramic material, it is important to decrease its sintering temperature. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 was added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 min. After the activation, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 A degrees C for 2 h. In order to determine the impact of mechanical activation on particle size distribution and powders morphology, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. In order to determine temperature intervals of chemical reactions and phase transitions, differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric analysis were used. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for more than 100 A degrees C, comparing to the literature data.

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20·10-7 oC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a highenergy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

AB - The mechanical activation can help reduce production costs and modify cordierite-based materials. In this study, the structure and electrical properties of the mechanically activated MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system have been analyzed. The mixtures of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 powders were mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for time periods ranging from 0 to 160 min. Structural investigations were performed on the obtained powders. The effects of activation and a two-step sintering process on the microstructure and crystal structure were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal stability was analyzed using DTA. Electrical measurements showed variations of the dielectric constant (epsilon(r)) and loss tangent (tan delta) as a function of the time of mechanical treatment.

AB - A possibility to apply raw, powdered peach shells ( PS) as a biosorbent for water purification was studied. The PSs are locally available as a solid waste in a fruit juice factory; methylene blue (MB) was chosen as representative of common pollutants in textile industry wastewater. The phase composition of prepared particles was identified by XRD. The particle morphology was characterized by FE-SEM, while the size distribution was measured by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer. The BET specific surface area was determined from N-2 adsorption/desorption experiments. The effect of operating parameters: the biosorbent amount (50-1000 mg/100 mL), contact time (10-180 min), solution pH (2-12) and initial concentration (10-100 ppm) on biosorption efficiency was examined. Optimal conditions for MB removal were found to be: the biosorbent amount of 400 mg/100 mL and pH 5.5. A high efficiency of MB removal was established after 180 min: 99% for [MB](i) = 10 ppm and 76% for [MB](i) = 100 ppm. Biosorption is well described by the Freundlich- and BET-type isotherms, implicating heterogeneous adsorption sites and interconnections between adsorbed molecules. The FTIR spectroscopy results indicate hydrogen bonding between the dye and the biomass. The obtained results shown that raw peach shell particles could be used as an efficient low-cost biosorbent for dye removal from water.

AB - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in the analysis of the powder morphology.

AB - In this paper the effects of mechanical activation on structural and microstructural changes of the system MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2 were analyzed. It was confirmed that mechanical activation led to the homogenization of powder particles, the comminuting of particles, and after this period, the introduced energy was used to induce changes in the crystal structure, which resulted in the emergence of defects, initially on the surface of the crystal lattice, and then inside.

AB - Mixtures of BaCO3-ZnO-TiO2 were mechanically activated using high-energy planetary ball mill during 20, 40 and 80 min. As the time of mechanical activation increased, the decrease in particle size was observed. The effect of milling on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, as well. Sintering process was performed in air at 1100 and 1200 C for 2 h. Various phases are present within mixtures sintered at 1100 and 1200 degrees C, and almost pure BaZn2Ti4O11 phase was obtained after 80 min of milling and sintering at 1200 degrees C for 2 h.

As the time of mechanical activation increased, the decrease in particle size was observed. The effect of milling on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy, as well. Sintering process was performed in air at 1100 and 1200 C for 2 h. Various phases are present within mixtures sintered at 1100 and 1200 degrees C, and almost pure BaZn2Ti4O11 phase was obtained after 80 min of milling and sintering at 1200 degrees C for 2 h.",
