Microstructure assessment of co alloy intended for dentistry

AB  - Cobalt–chromium–molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloys are known for medical use due to their biocompatibility, corrosion and 
wear resistance. The chemical and phase composition, as well as microstructure of the alloy directly affect the mechanical  properties. In this investigation, CoCrMo alloy samples were obtained by vacuum precise casting. The procedure of  melting and casting process as well as their parameters are given. Molds fabricated of copper, gray iron, steel, ceramics  and graphite were used during the casting process. In this way, the cooling rate influence on the obtained microstructure  was examined. Besides, different casting temperatures (1400°C, 1450°C and 1500°C) were applied for each kind of mold.  After metallographic preparation, the microstructure was examined on the cross section of samples by optical microscopy.  The obtained results show that by increasing the cooling rate, the microstructure of samples become finer and more  homogeneous.

AB  - Microstructure assessment is crucial for the design and production of high-quality alloys such as cast aluminum alloy ingots. Along with the effect of a more homogeneous microstructure to result in much better mechanical properties, better as-cast alloy quality indicates a higher efficiency of the aluminum alloys production process. During the aluminum alloy solidification process many microstructural defects can occur, which deteriorate the mechanical properties and hence decrease the usability of such an ingot. Application of the electromagnetic field during the vertical continuous casting process significantly reduces occurrence of these defects. In the present study, EN AW 7075 alloy samples were cast with and without application of an electromagnetic field and examined regarding the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and changes in the phase composition. The obtained results clearly show that it is possible to decrease or avoid casting defects by the electromagnetic field application as verified by the microstructure characterization and quantification, electrical conductivity tests and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

On the properties of hot forged ti-6al-4v alloy aimed for surgical implants

AB  - The investigation here is aimed to examine the structural and mechanical changes that might have occurred during the hot forging process, a process to obtain a surgical hip implant, and the subsequent heat treatment. Microstructural characterization, morphological and semi-quantitative chemical analyses have been accomplished using an optical and scanning electron microscope. Chemical analyses of all surfaces obtained by the dotted method in all analyzed samples have shown the approximate equal content of aluminum, titanium, vanadium, iron, and silicon. Tensile testing and measurements were following obtained microstructure, showing the uniformity of microstructure and properties along the forging part, as well as over its cross section. All tests proved that hot forging could be a suitable procedure for surgical implants processing.

Wetting phenomena of grooves at liquid metal/ceramics interface

AB  - The grain boundary groove (GBG) developing at the ceramic substrate under the liquid metal is evident, yet not fully explained influencing appearance in describing the wetting phenomena at liquid metal/ceramics interface. The focus here is on modelling of the phenomena at/around a groove between grains depending on grooves' geometry. Based on atomic force microscopy results, the groove efficiency assessment is provided as a function of the transferred mass quantity and related to grooves geometry. The transferred mass quantity and, according to it, the groove efficiency at parabolic GBG is about 10% higher comparing to the triangular GBG.

AB  - In presented paper results of the removal of lead ions from water solutions by the natural zeolite (clinoptilllite) and application of such contaminated zeolite materials as a supplement for standard additions portland cement are showed. In this investigations, the natural zeolite (clinoptilollite) with particle size 100% 43 μm was used. The experiments of lead ions adsorption showed that the maximum adsorption capacity of the natural zeolite was 66 mg Pb 2+ /g. After adsorption experiments the saturated zeolite with lead ions was used as a supplement to portland cement. Investigations of the mechanical properties of the cement with the addition, natural zeolite and zeolite saturated with lead ions showed that this material can be used as a supplement for portland cement up to 30%.

AB  - In this study the mechanical properties (reduction of area, S-0, tensile strength, R-m, yield strength, R-p, and elongation, A) of EN AW 7075 aluminum alloy obtained by electromagnetic casting were investigated at different operating parameters: frequency (V), field strength (T) and current intensity (I). The predictive mathematical models using Response Surface Methodology, with second order polynomial (SOP) regression models, and Artificial Neural Network model (ANN), were afterwards compared to obtained experimental results. Analysis of variance and post-hoc Tukey's HSD test at 95% confidence limit ("honestly significant differences") have been utilised to show significant differences between various samples. SOP models showed good prediction capabilities, with high coefficients of determination (r(2)), 0.531-0.977, while ANN model performed even better prediction accuracy: 0.800-0.992. The optimal samples were chosen depending on mechanical properties of the product (S-0 = 50.49mm(2), R-m = 405.75Nmm(-2), R-p = 302.49Nmm(-2), A = 6.86%), using optimal operating parameters (V = 30 Hz, I = 250 A, T = 18 x 10(-3) At).

The nano-wetting aspect at the liquid-metal/sic interface

AB  - The wetting process on the nano-scale, as an initial and essential step in liquid metal/ceramic joining, is discussed here. Thanks to recent breakthroughs in experimental techniques with nanometre resolution, questions posed several decades ago are being looked at again. Despite recorded facts on acting mechanisms, the published results are very diverse due to the variety of materials and their structures, as well as experimental conditions, so the modeling is inevitable for process development and to overcome the multi-scale influencing parameters issues. A nano-scale wetting model have been proposed and tested on results obtained in a liquid-metal/SiC system that was published in the literature.

AB  - This work presents a way to obtain the better quality of EN AW 7075 aluminum high-strength alloy by application of electromagnetic field (EMF) during the casting process. In this way, the uniform fine-grained microstructure, and hence the better mechanical properties of the alloy can be achieved. The microstructure and mechanical characterization for samples obtained with and without EMF were performed. The application of numerical simulation for hot forging process, using appropriate software, is efficient and highly useful tool for problem prediction in industrial production, reducing the time and costs in the process of development of new products. The input data of high strength Al-alloy EN AW-7075 is used for simulation because it enables the development of parts with complex dimensions and shape.

AB  - Eksperimentalnim istraživanjima su definisani kako tehnološka šema dobijanja kalcijuma iz krečnjaka aluminotermijskim procesom tako i osnovni radni parametri pojedinih tehnoloških faza. Uzorci krečnjaka koji su korišćeni u radu imaju visok sadržaj Mg, Na i K. Rendgenska analiza je pokazala da uzorci uglavnom sadrže kalcit i u manjoj količini dolomit. Na početku je ispitan uticaj temperature, vremena i granulometrijskog sastava na kalcinaciju kalcijum-karbonata. Vreme trajanja procesa disocijacije je 10-15 min na 1200 °C i povećava se sa smanjenjem veličine čestica do 5 mm. Nakon toga, ispitana je aluminotermijska redukcija kalcijum-oksida. Na temperaturi od 1200 °C i vakuumu od 3 KPa proces redukcije se završava za 2 h. Analiza hemijskog sastava kalcijum-oksida i kalcijuma pokazuje povećan sadržaj magnezijum-oksida i oksida alkalnih metala, posebno natrijuma.
AB  - We present experimental investigations that define both the technological scheme of calcium production from limestone by aluminothermic process and the basic operating parameters of the particular technological phases. The limestone with high content of Mg, Na and K was used in the study. X-ray analysis reveals that the samples contain mainly calcite with small amount of dolomite. At first, the effects of temperature, time and granulometry on the calcium carbonate calcination were examined. The dissociation process was completed in 10-15 min at 1200 °C, and the dissociation rate increased with decreasing particle size down to 5 mm. Afterwards, the aluminothermic reduction process of calcium oxide was investigated. At a temperature of 1200 °C and vacuum of at least 3 kPa, the reduction process completed within 2 h. The chemical composition of calcium oxide and calcium showed increased content of magnesium oxide and alkaline oxides (especially sodium).

AB  - U radu je prikazana mogućnost dobijanja homogenije mikrostrukture i ravnomernije raspodele legirajućih elemenata Zn i Mg u aluminijumskoj leguri EN AW 7075, prilikom livenja u prisustvu elektromagnetnog polja. Ispitana su i mehanička svojstva uzoraka koji su odliveni bez i sa elektromagnetnin poljem. Rezultati pokazuju da se livenjem u elektromagnetnom polju postižu prednosti u odnosu na klasičan postupak livenja aluminijumskih legura.
AB  - The microstructure and the mechanical properties of the samples obtained by conventional vertical continuous casting and electromagnetic casting of 7075 aluminum as-cast alloy were investigated. The better surface quality, more homogeneous alloying elements distribution and hence the microstructure and better mechanical properties were obtained in samples casted with electromagnetic field (EMF) compared with samples casted without EMF. The microstructure was analyzed by optical microscope and the variation of alloying elements, Zn and Mg, through the sample cross section was examined by chemical analysis. The mechanical properties of samples casted with and without electromagnetic field were determined using computerized materials testing machine Zwick/Roel Z 100.

The mold was made using the CO2 - Method, with the addition of active components, such as: MgO, TiO2, AIK(SO4)(2) and Na2SO4. At the liquid steel pouring temperature, these active components undergo decomposition in the mold, caused by heat release during pouring, Crystallization and cooling of castings. Silicates, which have an important influence on casting surface quality, are formed as a result of the interaction between the mould material and liquid steel.

AB  - Hidroksiapatitna (HAp) prevlaka je atmosferskim (APS) plazma-sprej postupkom naneta na metalne uzorke napravljene od 316LVM čelika, namenjenog za izradu implantata u ortopedskoj hirurgiji. Razvoj savremenih ortopedskih implantata podrazumeva da se na podlogu od bioinertnih legura nanosi bioaktivna HAp prevlaka. Sintetički HAp je hemijski sličan onom koji čini mineralnu građu kostiju i zuba. Zahvaljujući dobrim bioaktivnim svojstvima hidroksiapatitnih prevlaka moguće je obrazovanje stabilne veze između koštanog tkiva i implantata. U radu je prikazana mogućnost primene APS postupka za dobijanje stabilnih HAp prevlaka na uzorcima od nerđajućeg čelika 316LVM. Praćena je mikrostruktura i poroznost prevlake metodom optičke mikroskopije i skenirajuće elektronske mikroskopije. Ca/P odnos je određen EDS analizom.
AB  - For decades, the standard metallic materials for hip implants, besides the 316LVM stainless steel, were titanium- and cobalt/chromium-based alloys. Although bioinert, due to their corrosion resistance, they are not biocompatible. Contemporary surgical implants are no longer made solely from bioinert metals anymore, but with deposited bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings. Hydroxyapatite is chemically identical with the mineral constituent of bones and teeth, which, besides its biocompatibility, provides bioactivity as well. The HAp limitations are, however, weak tensile strength and low fatigue resistance for long term loadings, if used alone. This is the reason for HAp to be deposited onto the surgical implant, and to enable its bioactivity, which means intergrowth with bones, and therefore the long-lasting and mechanical stable non-cemented prosthesis. This is important predominantly because of the need for such prostheses for younger population and a better life quality. There are several contemporary techniques that have been used for deposition of these coatings onto the metal implant. The possibilities of atmospheric plasma-spraying for obtaining stable HAp coatings on 316LVM stainless steel, ordinarily used as a standard material for hip implants production, are presented in this paper. The coatings of a commercially available hydroxyapatite powder were plasma-sprayed onto specimens of medical grade 316LVM stainless steel under various operating conditions. Optical microscopy was used for microstructure and porosity characterization, while the coating morphology and Ca/P ratio were analyzed using an SEM equipped with EDX. The coating microstructure varied from a porous to a glassy structure, depending on the operating conditions and coating thickness. Coating porosity was determined to be at the lower required limit requested for the bone-coating intergrowth possibility, but nevertheless adhesion measurements showed good results. The Ca/P ratio was determined for both as-deposited coatings and after ageing in distilled water for various time and temperature combination.

abstract = "Hidroksiapatitna (HAp) prevlaka je atmosferskim (APS) plazma-sprej postupkom naneta na metalne uzorke napravljene od 316LVM čelika, namenjenog za izradu implantata u ortopedskoj hirurgiji. Razvoj savremenih ortopedskih implantata podrazumeva da se na podlogu od bioinertnih legura nanosi bioaktivna HAp prevlaka. Sintetički HAp je hemijski sličan onom koji čini mineralnu građu kostiju i zuba. Zahvaljujući dobrim bioaktivnim svojstvima hidroksiapatitnih prevlaka moguće je obrazovanje stabilne veze između koštanog tkiva i implantata. U radu je prikazana mogućnost primene APS postupka za dobijanje stabilnih HAp prevlaka na uzorcima od nerđajućeg čelika 316LVM. Praćena je mikrostruktura i poroznost prevlake metodom optičke mikroskopije i skenirajuće elektronske mikroskopije. Ca/P odnos je određen EDS analizom., For decades, the standard metallic materials for hip implants, besides the 316LVM stainless steel, were titanium- and cobalt/chromium-based alloys. Although bioinert, due to their corrosion resistance, they are not biocompatible. Contemporary surgical implants are no longer made solely from bioinert metals anymore, but with deposited bioactive hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings. Hydroxyapatite is chemically identical with the mineral constituent of bones and teeth, which, besides its biocompatibility, provides bioactivity as well. The HAp limitations are, however, weak tensile strength and low fatigue resistance for long term loadings, if used alone. This is the reason for HAp to be deposited onto the surgical implant, and to enable its bioactivity, which means intergrowth with bones, and therefore the long-lasting and mechanical stable non-cemented prosthesis. This is important predominantly because of the need for such prostheses for younger population and a better life quality. There are several contemporary techniques that have been used for deposition of these coatings onto the metal implant. The possibilities of atmospheric plasma-spraying for obtaining stable HAp coatings on 316LVM stainless steel, ordinarily used as a standard material for hip implants production, are presented in this paper. The coatings of a commercially available hydroxyapatite powder were plasma-sprayed onto specimens of medical grade 316LVM stainless steel under various operating conditions. Optical microscopy was used for microstructure and porosity characterization, while the coating morphology and Ca/P ratio were analyzed using an SEM equipped with EDX. The coating microstructure varied from a porous to a glassy structure, depending on the operating conditions and coating thickness. Coating porosity was determined to be at the lower required limit requested for the bone-coating intergrowth possibility, but nevertheless adhesion measurements showed good results. The Ca/P ratio was determined for both as-deposited coatings and after ageing in distilled water for various time and temperature combination.",

AB  - At the contact surface between the liquid metal and the mold wall a number of chemical and thermodynamical reactions were taken. The products of those reactions are spread out on both the sides, i.e., in the solidified metal or into the mold wall. The processes which took place in the casting mold-here made from sand mix, during the pouring of liquid metal, solidification and cooling down to room temperature, are pretty complex. The thermodynamic reactions at the contact surface of liquid metal/sand mold in the process of castings forming are discussed in this paper. Experiments were performed in molds made by CO2 sand casting process. As a pouring metal we used steels from an ordinary production program of a steel foundry, exactly it was the steel GS 50CrMo4, assigned by DIN. Some results obtained in our investigations during studying those processes are shown here.

AB  - U radu su prikazani osnovi elektromagnetnog postupka livenja aluminijumske legure EN AW 7075 kao i rezultati mehaničke karakterizacije otkovka od ove legure koja je dobijena livenjem klasičnim polukontinualnim postupkom livenja i livenjem pod dejstvom elektromagnetnog polja sa dve različite frekvence. Rezultati pokazuju da uzorci otkovaka dobijeni od legure koja je livena u elektromagnetnom polju imaju zadovoljavajuće vrednosti mehaničkih svojstava i da se pravilnim izborom radnih parametara livenja mogu stvoriti uslovi za skraćenje tehnološkog postupka prerade ove legure.
AB  - The electromagnetic casting process fundamentals of EN AW 7075 Al-alloy casting, as well as the mechanical characterization results of this alloy forgings are presented in this paper. Forgings are obtained from the alloy casted by classical semi-continuous casting process and by electromagnetic casting process using two different frequencies. Results reveal that forgings obtained from the alloy casted by electromagnetic casting process have adequate values of mechanical properties and that proper choice of operating parameters can lead to shortening of this alloy processing.

Ipak, ovakvi implantati poldožni su lokalnoj koroziji u ljudskom telu jer je zapaženo prisustvo njihovih metalnih jona u okolnim tkivima i telesnim tečnostima. Da bi se iskoristila prednost njihovih mehaničkih karakteristika, a postigla biokompatibilnost, moguće je na njihovu površinu naneti bioinertnu ili čak bioaktivnu prevlaku. Hidroksiapatit je poznat po svom bioaktivnom ponašanju, koje duguje hemijskoj istovetnosti sa ljudskim kostima. Elektroforetska deopzicija je relativno stara tehnika, koja je ovde primenjena uz upotrebu novog materijala - nanostrukturnog hidroksiapatita, kako bi se dobile ravnomerne i kompaktne hidroksiapatitne prevlake i tako prevazišla ograničenja prethodno korišćenih visokotemperaturnih tehnika nanošenja prevlaka i problemi sa složenim oblikom metalnog supstrata. Prevlake nanostrukturnog hidroksiapatita eletroforetski su deponovane na peskiranu površinu uzoraka od nerđajućeg čelika 316LVM, pri konstantnom naponu, za različito vreme deponovanja, a zatim su sinterovane u atmosferi argona na 1000oC. Toplotna stabilnost HAp praha prvo je ocenjena DTA/TG analizom u temperaturnom intervalu 23oC-1000oC. Za mikrostrukturnu karakterizaciju prevlake korišćen je SEM, a za određivanje faznog sastava XRD analiza.
AB  - Surgical metallic implants are usually made of stainless steel, titanium- and cobalt/chromium- based alloys which have superior structural and mechanical properties, and are corrosion resistant. Nevertheless, they are susceptible to local corrosion in the human body, releasing metal ions into the nearby body tissue and fluids. Keeping the advantage of their mechanical properties, their biocompatibility can be achieved through deposition the bioinert or even bioactive coating onto their surface. Hydroxyapatite is known by its bioactive behavior, originating from its chemical identity with human bones. The electrophoretic deposition is rather old technique used here with a novel nanostructured hydroxyapatite powder to obtain uniform and dense hydroxyapatite coatings, to overcome the restrictions of previously used high temperature coating techniques and to overcome the complex geometry metallic substrate problems. The coating of nanosized hydroxyapatite was electrophoretically deposited on blasted surface of stainless steel 316LVM samples at constant voltage, for different deposition times and subsequently sintered in argon atmosphere at 1000 oC. The HAp powder thermal stability was initially assessed using DTA-TG analyses over the temperature range of 23oC-1000oC. The microstructure characterization of the coating was accomplished using SEM, and phase composition was determined by XRD.

AB  - During the casting of metals at the interface between metal and mould, or contact surface metal-mould, some chemical reactions occur. Reaction products penetrate or move toward the mould as well as toward the castings. In this work the chemistry at the contact surface between the metal and mould was studied. The objective of the work was better understanding of the chemical reactions that occur, at the interfaces, during the casting processes. All experiments were performed, both, on a laboratory and industrial scale, using the steel samples DIN G-X 120Mn 12, the steel samples came from the steel casting industrial plant production list. The moulds were made using the CO2 procedure. Some active components were added to the mould mixture. During the casting process, while liquid metal enter into the mould vacancy, a kind of intensive reaction of liquid metal with quartz sand and added active components occur thus forming a new chemical compounds. These Compounds have an important influence on the steel castings quality, and consequently on the production economy.

AB  - This study presents an attempt to obtain the better quality of an aluminum super-high strength alloy by application of electromagnetic field during the casting process. The conventional continuous casting process of aluminum alloys causes many defects, such as surface imperfections, grain boundary segregation, non-uniform grain size, and porosity. The better ingot surface along with the homogeneous fine-grained microstructure, and hence the better mechanical properties of the ingot, can be achieved by applying the electromagnetic casting process. The microstructure characterization, accompanied by quantitative metallographic assessment, reveals that it is possible to avoid or decrease many defects of as cast ingots during electromagnetic casting process. In this article, the microstructure of the samples of as cast 7075 aluminum alloy, obtained with and without electromagnetic field influence, was analyzed by optical microscope and the variation of key alloying elements content, i.e., Zn and Mg, through the ingot cross section was examined by chemical analysis. Besides, the microstructural parameters such as dendrite arm spacing, interdendritic space width, as well as eutecticum and intermetallic phases volume fraction, were measured using linear method. The electromagnetic field influence on the microstructure of the as cast 7075 Al alloy was evaluated based on measured quantitative metallographic data.

AB  - Od vrste i kvaliteta kalupne mešavine odnosno njenog ponašanja u dodiru sa stopljenim metalom u realnim uslovima najviše zavise intenzitet, i uopšte razvoj, pojedinih procesa na graničnoj površini dodira metal-kalup. Značajno mesto u odigravanju procesa međusobnog delovanja livačkih kalupa i tečnog metala pored hemijskog, mineralnog sastava peska, vrste vezivnog sredstva imaju i dodaci kalupnim mešavinama. Ovi dodaci, tj aktivne komponente, uslovljavaju određene promene na povišenim temperaturama u samoj mešavini kao i njeno reagovanje sa površinskim slojem tečnog metala. Cilj ispitivanja je bio da se vidi u kolikoj meri sastav kalupne mešavine sa i bez dodatih-aktivnih komponenata utiče na površinu odlivaka.
AB  - The intensity, and overall development of individual process on the metal-mould interface depend on the type and quality of mould mixture or its behavior in contact with the melted metal in real conditions. Important role in interaction between foundry moulds and liquid metals, in addition to chemical and mineral composition of sand, and a type of binding material, play also additives for mould mixtures. These additives, i.e. active components, provided some changes at elevated temperatures inside the mixture, as well as its reaction with the surface layer of liquid metal. The aim of this investigation was to determine how the composition of the mould mixture with and without active components affect the surface of castings.

AB  - Zinc is a widely applicable metal and therefore the different composition and form of zinc waste is generated. The most important waste material generated in production and processing of zinc is scrap metal of zinc and its alloys, as well as slag, dust and sludge from the production and processing of cathode zinc and zinc alloys. In terms of processing technology, there are different applied procedures depending on the type of raw material. The processing of waste zinc and its alloys is pyrometallurgical and it is based on remelting of dry and degreased raw materials, with alloying during melting to correct the composition. Zinc dust and sludge are processed by Waelz procedure, where the zinc-oxide is obtained and further being processed usually by hydrometallurgical procedure. The zinc and brass slag are grinded, followed by separation metal and oxide components. Large, predominantly metal fraction is being directly melted to obtain zinc or brass. Small, predominantly oxide phase is subjected to hydrometallurgical treatment for zinc valorization.

AB  - Hidroksiapatit se široko koristi kao keramički biomaterijal zbog svoje bioaktivnosti koju ispoljava kada se u vidu prevlake nanese na metalni implantat, kao i zbog kompatibilnosti sa sastavom ljudskih kostiju. Prevlake hidroksiapatitnog nano-praha elektroforetski su istaložene na peskiranu površinu uzoraka od nerđajućeg 316LVM čelika, pri konstantnom naponu i za različito vreme taloženja, a potom sinterovane u vakuumu na 1040°C i u atmosferi argona na 1000°C. Premda visoke temperature sinterovanja, koje su neophodne kako bi se dobile kompaktne prevlake velike gustine, mogu da dovedu do faznih promena kod hidroksiapatita, u ovom radu je pokazano da je na supsrtatu od 316LVM čelika moguće dobiti bioaktivne prevlake u kojima nije došlo do fazne promene zahvaljujući prirodi korišćenog hidroskiapatitnog nano-praha stehiometrijskog sastava. Visokotemperaturna stabilnost korišćenog HAp praha potvrđena je DTA-TG analizom u temperaturnom opsegu 23-1000°C, tj. na temperaturama na kojima su rađeni eksperimenti sinterovanja. Mikrostrukturna karakterizacija nanetih prevlaka urađena je korišćenjem SEM, dok je za određivanje faznog sastava korišćena XRD analiza.
AB  - Hydroxyapatite is a widely used bioceramic material in implant coatings research because of its bioactive behavior when being deposited onto the metallic implant and compatibility with the human bones composition. The coating of nanosized hydroxyapatite was electrophoretically deposited on a blasted surface of stainless steel 316LVM samples at constant voltage, for different deposition times and subsequently sintered in both, vacuum and argon atmosphere, at 1040 and 1000°C, respectively. Although sintering temperatures needed to achieve highly dense coatings can cause HAp coating phase changes, the possibility to obtain a bioactive coating on 316LVM substrate, without the coatings phase changes due to the nature of the used stoichiometric nanostructured hydroxyapatite is presented in this work. The thermal stability of the used HAp powder was assessed by DTA-TG analyses over the temperature range of 23-1000°C, i.e., at the or nearby experimental sintering temperature. The microstructure characterization was accomplished using SEM, while phase composition was determined using XRD.

AB  - The relationships between electromagnetic frequency, microstructure and mechanical properties of continuous casting aluminum alloys were studied in this paper. EN AW 2024 and EN AW 2007 aluminum alloys ingots were produced by electromagnetic continuous casting process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as cast ingots were examined. Modifikovanje površine metalnih implantata nanošenjem hidroksiapatitnih prevlaka

AB  - U radu ce biti prikazane mogućnosti primene plazma sprej postupka i elktroforetskog taloženja hidroksiapatitne prevlake na metalnu osnovu. U ortopedskoj hirurgiji implantati se najčešće izrađuju od legura titana ili nerđajućeg čelika na koje se nanosi hidroksiapatitna (HAp) prevlaka. Hemijski sastav sintetičkog hidroksiapatita je identičan onom koji čini mineralnu građu kostiju i zuba. Zato ga organizam prihvata kao biokompatibilan. Međutim, on nema zadovoljavajuću mehaničku čvrstoću da bi sam mogao da izdrži opterećenja u dužem vremenskom periodu. AB  - Hydroxyapatite coatings are being deposited on orthopedic implants metal surface to obtain biocompatibile cementless prostheses. There is chemical identity between synthetic hydroxyapatite and the one that makes teeth and bones mineral structure, so it can be easily accepted as biocompatibile by human organism. Disadvantage is the lack of long-term mechanical strength, what implies its application as a coating on an implant made of titanium alloy or stainless steel. There are several up to date technological methods for deposition these coatings on metallic implants, some of them are atmospheric plasma spray method. and electrophoretic deposition.

AB  - High strength low-alloyed (HSLA) Cr-Mn-Si steels belong to a group of steels that can reach their full mechanical properties after quenching and tempering. Those properties depend both on the temperature and time of tempering. Knowing the tempering parameters, it is possible to reach the desired properties of the treated steel. Some results on investigating the Hollomon-Jaffe equation (in parametric form) application for tempering of HSLA steel, are shown in this paper. The experiments were performed in real production conditions, using a standard material. The quenching was performed at 870°C, the heating period was always 30 min, with subsequent cooling into the oil bath. The tempering was carried out in temperature range from 480 to 680°C, while tempering time varied from 15 min to 24 h. The degree of tempering is referred through the hardness values changing. The experimental results have shown a pretty well agreement to tempering parameters, included in Hollomon-Jaffe equation, for this kind of HSLA steel.
