AB - Adsorption of arsenic (V) by natural zeolitic tuff, modified with iron (III), was investigated. Also, the iron (III) adsorption characteristics by natural zeolitic tuff was evaluated. It was determined that iron (III) adsorption by starting zeolitic tuff was best represented by the Freundlich type of isotherm, having correlation coefficient (r (2)) of 0.990. Arsenic (V) adsorption by iron (III)-modified zeolitic tuff followed a nonlinear type of isotherm. The best fit of the experimental data was obtained using the Langmuir-Freundlich model (r (2) = 0.99), with the estimated maximum of arsenic (V) adsorption to iron (III)-modified zeolitic tuff of 1.55 mg/g.

AB - Adsorption of fumonisin B-1 (FB1) on natural clinoptilolite-rich zeolitic tuff, modified with different amounts (2, 5 and 10 mmol M+/100 g) of octadecyldimethylbenzyl ammonium (ODMBA) ions, at pH 3, 7 and 9, was investigated. The organozeolites were denoted as OZ-2, OZ-5 and OZ-10. Results showed that the presence of ODMBA ions at the zeolite surface greatly improved adsorption of FB1, especially at pH 7 and 9. FB1 adsorption on all three organozeolites showed a nonlinear type of isotherm, at pH 3 and 7 and 9. For OZ-2, the highest adsorption of FB1 was achieved atpH 3, while for OZ-10, the highest FB1 adsorption was observed atpH 9. At pH 7 and 9, FB1 adsorption was lowest for OZ-2, and increased as the amount of ODMBA at the surface increased. The highest FB1 adsorption was achieved when the zeolite surface was totally covered with ODMBA. Since OZ-2 has 20% of inorganic cations exchanged with ODMBA, the lower FB1 adsorption at pH 7 and 9 may be the result of the presence of the anionic form of FB1 that can not be adsorbed at the uncovered negatively-charged surface of the modified zeolitic tuff. The estimated maximum FB1 adsorption to OZ-10, based on a Langmuir fit to the data, was greatest (10.819 mg/g) at pH 3, suggesting that cationic form of FB1 also contributes to adsorption. Based on the structure of FB1 and the obtained adsorption data, it is possible that more than one sorption mechanism is relevant for FB1 adsorption by ODMBA modified zeolites.

AB - Sorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on organo-zeolites was investigated to determine sorbent-sorbate interaction. The hydrophobic character of the surface of the organo-zeolites was studied using in water vapor adsorption experiments. Water adsorption decreased with increasing stearyldimethylbenzylammoniumchloride (SDBAC) loading up to 75 mmol/kg, which is related to increasing sorbate hydrophobicity. With loadings above 75 mmol/kg (ECEC value), water vapor adsorption increased. Effects of adsorbent size, SDBAC loading and initial concentration of PAHs on the adsorption efficiency were also determined. The highest adsorption for the PAHs studied was achieved with OZ II 75 (OZ - organo-zeolite; II - particle size of 0.4-0.8 mm; 75 - mmol of surfactant/kg of zeolite). At a concentration of 20 mu g/dm(3) the adsorption index for benz[a]anthracene was 100%. The smaller adsorption indexes for PAHs with lower partition coefficients, K-ow, indicated that the adsorption is primarily hydrophobic. The number of bed volumes passed through the adsorbent before the first PAH appeared in the effluent was 770. Column experiments showed competitive adsorption among the PAHs with different hydrophobicities.

AB - The adsorption of uranium(VI) on heulandite/clinoptilolite rich zeolitic tuff modified with different amounts (2, 5 and 10 meq/100 g) of hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium (HDTMA) ion was investigated. The organozeolites were prepared by ion exchange of inorganic cations at the zeolite surface with HDTMA ions, and the three prepared samples were denoted as OA-2, OA-5 and OA-10. The maximal amount of HDTMAin the organozeolite OA-10 (10 meq/100 g) was equal to the external cation exchange capacity of the starting material. The results showed that uranium( VI) adsorption on unmodified zeolitic tuff was low (0.34 mg uranium(VI)/g adsorbent), while for the organozeolites, the adsorption increased with increasing amount of HDTMA at the zeolitic surface. The highest adsorption indexes were achieved for the organozeolite OA-10, in which all the surface inorganic cations had been replaced with HDTMA. An investigation of the adsorption of uranium(VI) ions onto organozeolite OA-10 at different pH values (3, 6 and 8) showed that the adsorption index increased with increasing amount of adsorbent in the suspension. Since uranium(VI) speciation is highly dependent on pH, from the adsorption isotherms, it can be seen that uranium(VI) adsorption on organozeolite OA-10 at pH 6 and 8 is well described by a Langmuir type of isotherm, while at pH 3, it corresponds to a Type III isotherm.

AB - The surface properties of zeolites A, X, Y and natural zeolite clinoptilolite (CLI) functionalized by cationic surfactants were investigated. The quaternary ammonium type surfactants, such as hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) chloride, stearildimethylbenzylammonium (SDMBA) chloride and distearildimethylammonium (DSDMA) chloride, replaced inorganic cations like Na+ and Ca2+ on the external surface of zeolites. The adsorption capacities of all organic cations followed the order of CLI > CaY > CaX > CaA > NaY > NaX > NaA and increased with the increase of Si/Al molar ratio in zeolite structure. This modification resulted in an alteration in the surface property of zeolites - it changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic. The adsorption of selected pesticides with different hydrophobicity on surfactant-modified zeolites was studied. It is shown that surfactant-modified zeolites can be used for removal of pesticides from the environment. The increase in hydrophobicity of pesticides resulted in an increase in pesticide adsorption on SDMBA and DSDMA modified zeolites.

AB - Adsorption of zearalenone (ZEN), ochratoxin A (OCHRA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on natural zeolite, clinoptilolite, modified with different amounts of octadecyldimethylbenzyl ammonium (ODMBA) ions was investigated. Results showed that adsorption of hydrophobic ionizable ZEN on unmodified zeolite tuff was very low and that adsorption on organozeolites increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the zeolitic surface. The adsorption was independent of the form of ZEN in solution and the solution pH, indicating that hydrophobic interactions with ODMBA are responsible for ZEN adsorption. Adsorption of low polar ionizable OCHRA on organozeolites also increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the zeolitic surface, however, OCHRA showed moderate adsorption on unmodified zeolitic tuff at pH 3. OCHRA adsorption on unmodified zeolite as well as on lower surface coverage of organozeolite was dependent on the form of OCHRA in solution; there was a decrease of adsorption at high pH, where OCHRA is in the anionic form. It indicated that at acidic pH, low surface coverage allows some combination of hydrophobic interaction with ODMBA and interactions with the surface of the zeolite. At higher surface coverage, the OCHRA adsorption was higher and practically independent of pH, indicating that the hydrophobic interactions of OCHRA with ODMBA are responsible for its adsorption. Nonionizable low polar AFB1 had a high affinity for the unmodified zeolitic tuff and the adsorption of AFB1 was greatly reduced for organozeolites, indicating that AFB1 does not have high tendency for hydrophobic interactions with ODMBA. pH dependence of AFB1 adsorption, while AFB1 has the same form at all pHs, demonstrated that the surface modification of the zeolite depends on pH and that these modifications have influence on its adsorption. The calculated dipole moments of neutral mycotoxin molecules: AFB1-9.5D, OCHRA-6.9D and ZEN-2.2D are in qualitative agreement with adsorption experimental data.

AB - The results of adsorption of uranyl ion on modified natural zeolites: HZ – zeolite modified with hydronium ions and OHZ – zeolite whose surface was modified with primary ammine, are presented in this paper. Compared to unmodified zeolite, both modified samples showed high uranyl ion adsorption indexes. The obtained results showed that, at mass ratio adsorbent: uranyl ion 1000:1, the uranyl ion adsorption index was 95.3% on sample HZ and 99.9% on sample OHZ. On both modified zeolites, a general trend of decreasing uranyl ion adsorption with decreasing the mass ratio adsorbent: uranyl ion can be observed. At mass ratio adsorbent: uranyl ion 50:1, the following adsorption indexes were obtained: 42% on sample HZ and 52% on sample OHZ.

AB - The paper presents results of investigations of the effect of a preparation based on natural zeolite on production results of fattening lambs. The experiment was performed on two groups of lamps (control – K and experimental – O), 15 animals per group, and for a duration of 90 days. The diet ration consisted of sheeps’ milk, a compound mix for fattening lambs, and meadow hay. Lambs of the experimental group, contrary to those of the control group were administered preparations based on natural zeolite. The preparation Min-a-Zel® S (in the form of 25% suspension) was administered to lambs from birth until the 14th day of life, directly into the mouth, once daily (before the morning meal), 10 ml each. Min-a-Zel Plus was administered starting from the 15th day by adding it to the fodder mix (0.5%). Feeding was ad libitum. The average body mass of lambs at the end of the experiment, according to the sequence of treatments (K:O), was 24.40:26.94 kg (P LT 0.01). The daily groth of the lambs, during the course of the experiment, was 229:256 g, and was 27 g or 11.79% higher (P LT 0.01) in the experimental group. The experimental group had better utilization of dry matter, proteins and energy, which indicates that the use of a preparation based on natural zeolite in the diet of fattening lambs is justified.

AB - Samples of natural HEU-type zeolites – clinoptilolite-Ca, from the Novakovici deposit (near Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina) were treated with the hydrochloric acid of various concentrations (from 10-3Mto 2M). Zeolitic tuffs before and after the acid treatment were examined using IR, XRPD, and chemical analyses. The changes in the crystal structure of acid treated samples showed a significant reduction in the crystallinity of zeolitic tuffs (60–70 %), which were effected by hydrochloric acid with concentrations of 1 M and above.

AB - In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of organozeolite (Min-a-Zel Plus®) to alleviate the toxic effects of zearalenone (ZEN) in lambs. Min-a-Zel Plus® was able to bind >90% of ZEN in vitro at pH 3, 7 and 9. For in vivo studies, sixty four lambs were divided in to four groups which included: I - control group - basal diet containing neither Min-a-Zel Plus® nor zearalenone; II - basal diet supplemented with 8.3 mg ZEN/kg diet; III - basal diet supplemented with 8.3 mg ZEN/kg and 0.2% Min-a-Zel Plus®; IV - basal diet supplemented with 8.3 mg ZEN/kg and 0.5% Min-a-Zel Plus®. The Min-a-Zel Plus® supplement dramatically reduced the content of ZEN in liver, kidneys and muscles. The lower amount (0.2%) reduced the content of ZEN in all samples, but ZEN was still present in the organs. Addition of 0.5% Min-a-Zel Plus® eliminated ZEN from all organs, totally. These results indicate that Min-a-Zel Plus® is effective in preventing the toxic effects of ZEN, which may be present in lamb rations.

AB - The electrolytic conductivity of bentonite aqueous suspensions was investigated. The starting material (Ca-Mont) was exchanged with sodium ions, using an ion exchange column. The sodium form of bentonite (Na-Mont) was used to obtain organobentonites. The electrolytic conductivity of the starting material, Na-Mont and organobentonites was studied for different suspension concentration. The highest value of the electrolytic conductivity was obtained for Na-Mont, while the organic cation in the bentonite structure decreased the electrolytic conductivity.

AB - The in vitro mycotoxins adsorption by natural clinoptilolite-heulandite rich tuff modified with different amounts of octadecyldimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (Do) and dioctadecyldimethyl ammonium chloride (Pr) was investigated. Two methods of preparation of the organo-zeolites (OZs) were used-wet process (activation in suspension) and dry process (tribochemical process). The chemical stability of the two organically modified zeolites (OZs) obtained by wet and dry processes was investigated after an electrolyte treatment at pH 1, 7 and 10 by thermal (DTA/DDTA/TG) analysis and IR spectroscopy. Results of IR and thermal analysis, after electrolyte treatment, confirm that OZs obtained by wet and dry processes are completely stable in the investigated pH region. Mycotoxin binding studies showed that all the OZs effectively adsorbed aflatoxin B1, zearalenone, ochratoxin A and the ergopeptine alkaloids. The method of preparation of the OZs had no influence on adsorption of mycotoxins. The non-linear shape of the mycotoxin adsorption isotherms of OZs suggests that modification of zeolitic tuff with long chain organic cation Pr, by both wet and dry processes of preparation, formed the same specific active sites which are relevant for adsorption of aflatoxin B1, zearalenone and ochratoxin A by OZs.

AB - Besides high efficiency for adsorption of mycotoxins (aflatoxins zearalenone, ochratoxin A etc) as well as inactivity for adsorption of vitamins, aminoacids and microelements, Minazel Plus is stable in the range from pH 1 to pH 10. Consumption of Minazel Plus in in vivo conditions caused no negative effects in animals. Based on the high chemical stability of organozeolite complex those results are expected. For preventive application of Minazel Plus, when diet contain mycotoxins in amounts twice that permitted, addition of 0.2% (2 g/kg feed) of Minazel Plus is recommended. However, the addition of 0.5% (5 g/kg) is recommended when diet contain much higher amounts of mycotoxins. In that case, even feed contain mycotoxins residues of mycotoxins in kidney, liver or muscles of lambs can not be found.

AB - Organo mineralni kompleksi su dobijeni aktivacijom osnovnih minerala (zeolita, bentonita i diatomijske zemlje) sa primarnim aminom (olejlaminom) i alkil amonijum jonom (stearil dimetil benzil amonijum hloridom).

The modification of the zeolite surface was carried out in two steps. The first step was treatment of the zeolite with 2M HCl. This acid treatment of the zeolite increased its affinity for neutral molecules such as surface-active amines. The second step of the modification was the adsorption of oleylamine on the acid treated zeolite. Four types of organo-mineral complexes were prepared and their anion adsorption properties were compared to those of organo-zeolite. The adsorption of sulphate bichromate and dihydrogenphosphate anions on the organo-mineral complexes was investigated. The anion adsorption measurements showed that the most efficient adsorbent for anion water pollutants was the primary amine modified H+-form zeolite.

AB - Zahvaljujući negativnom naelektrisanju i poroznosti strukture, prirodne mineralne sirovine (gline i zeoliti) imaju široku primenu kao katjonski izmenjivači i molekulska sita.
AB - Due to permanent negative charges on their surfaces, clay minerals and zeolites are used a lot as cationic exchanger and molecular sieves. Investigations showed a high efficiency for adsorption of heavy metal and other cation contaminants presented in waters. Investigation results may served as a base for application the mineral adsorbents for industrial water purification.

AB - The in vitro adsorption of ochratoxin A (OCHRA) by clinoptilolite-heulandite rich tuff modified with different amounts -20, 50 and 100 mumol M+/g of octadecyldimethyl benzyl ammonium (ODMBA) ion was investigated. The organo-zeolites were denoted as OZ-2, OZ-5 and OZ-10. The maximal amount of ODMBA in organo-zeolites 100 mumol M+/g was equal to external cation exchange capacity of starting material. Adsorption of OCHRA by unmodified zeolitic tuff was 40% at pH 3 and 3% at pH 7 and 9. OCHRA adsorption on organo-zeolites increased as the levels of ODMBA increased. At low coverage of zeolitic surface with ODMBA-organo-zeolite OZ-2, adsorption of OCHRA was lower at pH 7 and 9 than at pH 3. The decreased adsorption of OCHRA at pH 7 and 9 may be induced by the presence of anionic form of OCHRA which probably led to repulsion between the OCHRA and uncovered negative zeolitic surface. At higher coverage of the zeolitic surface, organo-zeolites OZ-5 and OZ-10, adsorption of OCHRA was pH independent. OCHRA adsorption on OZ-2 and OZ-10 showed non linear type of isotherm at pH 3, 7 and 9. Adsorption of OCHRA by OZ-5 followed a non linear type of isotherm at pH 7 and 9, while at pH 3 the adsorption was best represented by an S-shaped isotherm. Adsorption of OCHRA on organo-zeolites is dependent on the amount of organic cation at the surface, as well as on their surface concentration-arrangement of alkyl chains at the surface. At low surface concentration of ODMBA, adsorption of OCHRA may be dependent on the form of OCHRA in solution.

AB - The structural and acid stability of three zeolitic tuffs from Zlatokop Beočin and Novakovići deposits were investigated. The HCl solution of various strengths from 10^-3 to 2M was used. The calculation of Si/Al ratio of starting materials showed that zeolitic tuffs from Zlatokop and Novakovići deposits are rich in clinoptilolite, while zeolitic tuff from Beočin deposit is rich in hettlandite. The acid treatment of all three zeotitic tuffs showed that decationisation was accompanied with dealumination, and both processes were increased with increasing the acid concentration. However, at lower acid concentrations (10^-3-l0^-1 M) primarily, ion exchange of inorganic cations in tuffs was occurred. The content of Al released from zeolitic tuffs during the acid treatment suggested that at HCl concentrations above 10^-1 M dealumination was occurred. From XRPD data, HCl effected a significant reduction in cristallinity of zeolitic tuffs with concentration of IM and above. The acid resistance of zeolitic tuffs from different deposits decreased in the following order: Zlatokop > Novakovići > Beočin.

AB - Novi mineralni adsorbent mikotoksina Min-a-zel Plus, je dobijen katjonskom izmenom površinski izmenljivog neorganskog katjona minerala zeolita sa organskim katjonom. Organskom modifikacijom rainerala dolazi do promena u površinskom naelektrisanju i hidrofobnosti. .
AB - The new mineral adsorbent for mycotoxins adsorption Min-a-zel Plus was obtained by cation exchange of inorganic exchangeable cations from zeolite surface with organic cations. Organic modification influence on change of surface charge and hydrofobicity. Both these pharameters determine the efficiency for organic molecules adsorption. On the basis of laboratory results, the technology for production of the new mycotoxins adsorbent having adsorption level in in vitro tests over 90% for zearalenone, aflatoxin Bl, ochratoxin A and ergot alcaloids was determined. T-2 toxin adsorption on this sorbent was 84% and DAS was 50% while Vomitoxin was adsorbed only 9%. The adsoiption process was fast and complete in 30 minutes contact adsorbent/toxin without desorption. .

AB - The adsorption of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by cation-exchanged clinoptilolite zeolitic tuff and montmorillonite was investigated at 37 ºC and pH 3.8 from an aqueous electrolyte having a composition similar to that of gastric juices of animals. Bothminerals were exchanged from the natural form to the sodium form and then to the Cu2+, Zn2+ and Co2+-rich forms. The cation exchange was different for the different cations, but in all cases the exchanges were larger on montmorillonite than on clinoptilolite. The degree of exchange on montmorillonite was 76 % for copper (from a total of CEC 0.95 meq/g, Cu2+ -0.73 meq/g) and 85 % for zinc and cobalt. Under the same conditions (concentration, temperature, pH, contact time), the degree of exchange on zeolitic tuff was 12 % for Cu2+ (from a total CEC of 1.46 meq/g, Cu2+ -0.17 meq/g), 8 % for Zn2+ and 10 % for Co2+. Both groups of mineral adsorbents showed high AFB1 chemisorption indexes (cα). For the montmorillonite forms, cα ranged from 0.75 for the Cu-exchanged montmorillonite to 0.89 for the natural Ca-form, 0.90 for the Zn-exchanged form and 0.93 for the Co-exchanged montmorillonite. The adsorption of AFB1 on the different exchanged forms of clinoptilolite gave similar values of cα for the Cu and Ca forms (0.90) and values of 0.94 and 0.95 for the Zn- and Co-exchanged form. The impact of the mineral adsorbents on the reduction of essential nutrients present in animal feed (Cu, Zn, Mn and Co) showed that the Ca-rich montmorillonite had a higher capability for the reduction of the microelements than the Ca-rich clinoptilolite.

AB - Mineral adsorbents based on natural zeolite and bentonite may be used in animal diets in order to prevent poisoning caused by mycotoxins. In this paper vitamin B6 and microelement adsorption by six different samples of mineral adsorbents was considered. The results indicated that mineral adsorbents based on natural zeolite had a low efficiency to bind vitamin B6 in vitro (from C alpha=5% for sample 2 to C alpha=22% for sample 3). This process is dependent on crystallinity and the mineralogical composition of the zeolitic samples. On the contrary, vitamin B6 was tightly bound to the mineral adsorbent based on bentonite (HSCAS)-C alpha=98%. The investigation of microelement adsorption in vitro, at pH 3.5 and 5, by zeolite and bentonite showed that Cu, Zn, Co and Mn were bound less tightly to zeolite than to bentonite. The obtained data suggest that bentonite material would reduce micronutrient availability more than zeolite.

AB - The adsorption of sulphate, hydrogenchromate and dihydrogenphosphate anions on surfactant-modified clinoptilolite (SMC) was investigated. The SMCs were prepared by the adsorption of cis-1-aminoctadecen-9 (oleylamine) on both modified and unmodified natural clinoptilolite tuff. The properties of the modified clinoptilolite samples, such as cation type, structure of the zeolite framework and ECEC value, determined the mechanism of oleylamine adsorption, and consequently anion adsorption on the external clinoptilolite surface. According to the strength of the anion adsorption, two groups of SMCs could be distinguished: strong and weak anion adsorbents. Strong anion adsorbents were obtained by oleylamine adsorption on H+-clinoptilolites by protonation of the -NH2 groups. This mechanism of oleylamine adsorption resulted in the surface precipitation mechanism of anion adsorption being the dominant mechanism. The oleylamine derivatives of Ca- and Na-clinoptilolite were weak anion adsorbents. Oleylamine is adsorbed on Ca- and Na-clinoptilolite by hydrogen bonding, thus yielding insufficient adsorption sites fur anions. Hydrogenchromate and dihydrogenphosphate anions were nevertheless adsorbed on these SMCs by interaction with oleylamine. The experiments of anion adsorption on various oleylamine loaded SMCs confirmed the existence of two types of anion adsorption sites and showed that excess oleylamine did not significantly influence the anion adsorption in the investigated concentration range. The kinetic results showed that SO42- and H2PO4- adsorptions were slow processes while HCrO4- adsorption was completed in a few minutes,

AB - The kinetics of aflatoxins B1 and G2 adsorption on Ca-clinoptilolite at pH 2 and 7, in aqueous electrolyte at 37 °C were studied. For both aflatoxins, the adsorption process begins with a fast reaction whereby most of the toxin is adsorbed in the first few minutes. This fast process is followed by the significantly slower process of aflatoxin bonding at active centers of mineral adsorbent. The initial rate method showed that the fast adsorption process of aflatoxin B1 and G2, at both pH values is a first order reaction, while the slow adsorption process of these aflatoxins is a zero order reaction. The adsorption indexes and adsorption rates for both examined toxins were pH dependent. In the investigated initial toxins concentration ranges (500-3000 μg/dm3), high adsorption indexes were achieved (> 80 %).

abstract = "Praćena je kinetika adsorpcije aflatoksina B1 i G2 na Ca-klinoptilolitu, u vodenom rastvoru elektrolita, na pH 2 i pH 7 i na temperaturi 37 °C. U ispitivanom opsegu koncentracija (500-3000 μg/dm3 postignuti su visoki indeksi adsorpcije kako aflatoksina B1 tako i aflatoksina G2 (> 80%)., The kinetics of aflatoxins B1 and G2 adsorption on Ca-clinoptilolite at pH 2 and 7, in aqueous electrolyte at 37 °C were studied. In the investigated initial toxins concentration ranges (500-3000 μg/dm3), high adsorption indexes were achieved (> 80 %).",
